Driver Profile – Darcy Reid  - #18 Late Model.
By Tom Stephenson

Darcy Reid may be a new face in the Late Model division this year, but he is not new to racing.  Darcy said, “I started when Laird opened.  I ran a Super Stock in 1999 and 2000, the first two years the track was opened. ”  Darcy has been absent as a driver for a few years.  He continued, “ It got real expensive and I just couldn’t afford it.”

He’s back this year with the assistance of his car owner.  Darcy said, “I don’t have a nickel into it.  The car is owned by Bronco Tomasic  from Classic Automotive.  He owns the 10 car (of Paul McLean) also.  This is the car that Paul (McLean) put into the guardrail last year.  This is the one that was wrecked.  It wasn’t as bad as a lot of people thought it was.”   The car that Darcy drives is a sharp looking machine, painted in black and gold.  McLean’s car has a similar paint scheme.

Actually, Darcy’s race experience goes back further.  He said, “I raced a Factory Stock in Kinross and Onaway in 98.  I ran a bomber car over there too.  I’ve been around racing  all my life.  My dad helped on a car when I was about 6 years old.  One of my pit guys, Hank Johnston used to race a Late Model down in Onaway and I helped him there.  Now it’s the other way around, he’s helping me in the pits.”  Darcy’s team mates are listed on his car: Branda, Sandra, Terry, Paul, Garth, Carl, Willy,  Hank and Justin.

His sponsors include Classic Automotive  (Bronco Tomasic),  “he’s the guy with the coin”;  Northern Fencing , Total Tire, Wine Time, Twilight Resort in Montreal River, Northern Jewellry, and Tressa Hairdressing.
Darcy drives a dump truck for Archibald Brothers for a living, but also has a small business called Backyard Fabrication,  he does various things including welding work, custom trailers, and general repair.
Darcy is single, with a girlfriend. Darcy’s stepdaughter, Branda, age 17 is also on the pit crew.    Darcy said, “We’ve already talked about her driving in a stock four.”

When asked for his thoughts about how this season is progressing, Darcy said, “I think we are doing pretty good.  We’re out every race. We haven’t had any major damage yet either.”   Darcy generally stays away from racing too close to other cars.  “I try and pick my spots, that’s about it.”  The result is that Darcy doesn’t have to spend a lot of time working on repairing his car either.  He said, “I work on it one night a week, that’s about it.”  The attitude and perseverance will likely earn Darcy a top spot in the points for the division at the end of the season.
